Fetch is the perfect mix of exercise, training and bonding — but most puppies don’t bring the toy back on day one. Break it into small wins and your pup will be a pro before you know it.

Step 1: Spark interest

Pick one favourite toy and make it exciting. Wiggle it, toss it a short distance, and praise any interest. Keep sessions short and upbeat.

Step 2: Reward the pickup

The moment your puppy grabs the toy, mark it with a happy "yes!" and a treat. You’re teaching that holding the toy is a great thing.

Step 3: Encourage the return

Call your puppy back with excitement and reward them when they come close — even if they don’t drop the toy yet. Distance comes with practice.

Step 4: Add the "drop"

Trade the toy for a treat and add a cue like "drop." Soon the full loop — chase, grab, return, release — clicks into place.

Always end on a high note while your puppy still wants more. Short, joyful sessions build a lifelong love of the game.
