A little rain — or a small apartment — should never stand between your pet and a great day of play. With a bit of creativity, indoor time can be just as enriching as a romp in the park. Here are ten of our favourite ways to keep tails wagging and whiskers twitching, whatever the weather.
1. Rotate the toy box
Pets get bored of the same toys on the floor day after day. Keep half of them hidden away and swap the selection every few days — old toys suddenly feel brand new again, which sparks fresh curiosity and play.
2. Build a treat hunt
Hide small treats or kibble around a room and let your pet sniff them out. Scent work is mentally tiring in the best way and taps into natural foraging instincts.
3. Try a puzzle feeder
Puzzle feeders turn mealtime into a game. They slow down fast eaters, reduce boredom, and give your pet a satisfying problem to solve.
4. Teach a new trick
Five minutes of training a day keeps the mind sharp. Spin, high-five, or "go to bed" — every new cue is enrichment and bonding rolled into one.
5. Set up an obstacle course
Cushions, chairs and cardboard boxes make a perfect mini agility course. Guide your pet through with a toy or treat and celebrate every lap.
6. Play tug — the right way
A sturdy rope toy and a few rules (release on cue, no teeth on hands) make tug a fantastic energy-burner that also reinforces self-control.
7. Freeze a lick mat
Spread a little wet food or peanut butter on a lick mat and freeze it. The slow, soothing licking calms anxious pets and keeps them busy for ages.
8. Window watching
A comfy perch by the window is pure entertainment for cats — and many dogs love it too. Bird feeders outside add a live show to the mix.
9. Chase the light (carefully)
A flashlight or chase toy gets pets sprinting indoors. Always end the game with a real, catchable toy so they get the satisfaction of a "win."
10. Just relax together
Enrichment isn't only physical. Quiet grooming, gentle massage and calm cuddle time strengthen your bond and help an over-stimulated pet wind down.
Keep it fun and safe
Rotate activities, watch for tiredness, and always choose toys that match your pet’s size and chewing style. A happy indoor pet is an active, engaged, well-rested one — and that means a happier home for everyone.
